History of the Pompadour Twinning
Folkestone Racecourse and
Pompadour in South West France are the first Anglo/French
racecourses to sign a twinning agreement. Kate Hills, head of
public relations for Arena Leisure owners of Folkestone, and Emma
Santer, Racecourse Manager at Folkestone, visited their French
counterparts for the weekend in summer 2007 to celebrate the
twinning of the two courses at Pompadour where a ribbon cutting
ceremony and twinning agreement signing took place during racing on
Sunday 15th July.
Pompadour is primarily a
jumping course with steeple chase and cross country racing. The
cross country course is very challenging and an amazing spectacle,
with tight turns and combination fences plus stone walls and open
water. There is a sand all weather flat track around the outside of
the picturesque grass course. It is set in a bowl surrounded by
forest with the beautiful Chateau de Pompadour, which resembles a
fairy tale castle, overlooking it at one end. Behind the Chateau is
the National Stud with stunning mews style stables and huge cobbled
yards housing everything from rare heavy breeds to Anglo Arabs and
Thoroughbreds. Pompadour is known at the 'City of the
Horse', and stages top class events for all types of equestrian
disciplines throughout the year.
